How do Professional Mermaids Breathe Underwater?
Have you ever watched a video of a mermaid performer and wondered “how do they stay underwater so long!?” You’re not alone. I’m a professional mermaid myself, and sometimes I question whether or not my peers really can breathe underwater! So how do professional mermaids breathe underwater? Well, the short answer is… we don’t (usually), but some do! Let me explain…
Professional mermaids use a few different techniques in order to create the illusion of breathing underwater. This can be done a few different ways and will depend on the individual mermaid’s preference and their workplace. Most mermaid and merman performers typically hold their breath underwater- some for 2 minutes or longer! This is done as safely as possible and the merfolk who do this are typically trained freedivers and usually have someone with them in case of an emergency. Some mermaids will also use breathing tubes that supply them with air as they need it while they’re underwater. This is most common in aquariums or in situations where the performer is swimming with a scuba diver and is being supplied oxygen from their tank.
If you’d like to know how I personally “breathe” underwater as a professional mermaid, or would like to know how long I can hold my breath, please feel free to watch this video that explains that exact thing (and more!):
That video will also answer some other frequently asked questions that I get asked as a performing mermaid. The video is actually part of a series, so if you’d like to see more “behind the scenes” mermaid content, please feel free to subscribe to my YouTube channel, The Magic Crafter.
Thanks for stopping by. Have a magical day!
