HOW TO PUT ON A SILICONE MERMAID TAIL DISCREETLY
Want to know how to put on a silicone mermaid tail quickly and discreetly without ruining the magic for any children in the area? This is what I do at public events where a private changing area is not available to me. Most of my events are done outdoors, and there aren’t always good places to hide when transforming into a mermaid. So I’ve had to get creative. I hope you will find this information helpful!
And if you’d like to know the basics of getting into a silicone mermaid tail, I’d suggest starting with this video first.
STEP 1: WRAPPING YOUR MERMAID TAIL
Before I tell you how I get changed into my silicone mermaid tail without being seen, first I need to explain to you how I wrap my silicone mermaid tail prior to events, since this will come in handy later.
Place your silicone mermaid tail backside down on a large fabric tablecloth (I will link everything you need here)
Fold the body of your tail over the fluke of the tail. The goal is to make it small and manageable. This will work for most tails.
Fold the bottom corners of the tablecloth over the fluke of your tail. The ends of your fluke should be gently cradled by the tablecloth- don’t be too aggressive with it!
Hold this in place while you fold the other end of the tablecloth over and under the fluke as shown. Once you tuck a few pieces of the tablecloth under the tail, it should hold its shape well.
Next you’ll want to wrap this all up with a blanket. I’d recommend choosing a blanket that is not mermaid themed to avoid suspicion.
Now you can load your silicone mermaid tail into the car. Please don’t use your back when moving your tail. Use your glutes and engage your core muscles!
STEP 2: GETTING INTO YOUR COSTUME UNDETECTED
If you’re getting changed on an abrasive surface, such as concrete or boulders, you may want to put down a yoga mat or two before setting down your tail. I’d also try to find a place that blocks the view of you from at least one side, if possible.
Once your space is ready for you, set down your tail and start unwrapping it.
First, you’ll want to loosen the blanket so that it can be moved with ease.
Reach under the blanket and grab the top corners of your tablecloth. As you lay out the tablecloth, quickly pull the blanket over the tail so that nothing is revealed. I would suggest using a rectangle blanket rather than a square one like mine- it will provide you with more coverage!
Slide your legs under the blanket and unfold your silicone tail.
Unless you’re wearing harem pants like me, you’ll want to take your pants off.
Then you will start getting dressed. I always wear my SeaVenger scuba socks with my silicone tails, since they have grip on the bottom that helps keep my feet in my monofin and helps prevent me from slipping off slimy rocks when I am getting out of the water after an event.
You’ll want to pull what you need out of your bag and have it organized and easy to grab.
Then, pour some warm water into your travel container with a pre-portioned amount of organic conditioner in it. This is generally used from the mid-thigh down to help me get into my costume. Make sure to shake it well!
I use Astroglide’s Water Based lubricant from the mid-thigh up to my belly to help me get into my tail the rest of the way, since it made to go around your bikini area. Some people prefer to use water, but I don’t find that water alone is good enough for getting into my Mernation tails.
Next you’ll put your feet inside the mouth of the silicone mermaid tail and lather up your legs and booties in your chosen lubricant. Try your best to do this under the cover of the blankets.
Once your feet are in your monofin, you can start rolling the tail up your body. I find that using dish rags to get a gentle grip can help make this a million times easier and will keep your nails from damaging your tail. So please use dish rags!
With the application of plenty of lube, and the power of dish rags, your tail should be very easy to get on. It doesn’t take long to put on a silicone mermaid tail when you use the right technique!
Double check to make sure you got all of the wrinkles out of your mermaid tail.
And now, use a dish rag to wipe away an extra lube around the upper portion of your legs, your belly and your bottom. This will help prevent the tail from sliding down once you start moving around.
Do one final wrinkle check.
Once you’ve got your tail on properly, you can put your last-minute accessories on.
Now you are ready to be a magical mermaid!
Put your things away or have someone help you put them away and hide them before you go off to do your thing.
STEP 3: GET TO YOUR LOCATION
I’m a pretty self-sufficient mermaid and am also pretty strong for my size, so I often can get around without much help if I’m already near my location. However, even I need the occasional wheelbarrow or cart ride to get around when a mermaid log-roll or booty-scoot isn’t enough. Do what is safe for you and always have someone around to help out regardless of how independent you are.
Go out there and have fun, be safe and make magical memories that you and your two-legged friends can look back on with a smile.
