ARE READY TO GET A SILICONE MERMAID TAIL?
Many mermaids and mermen aspire to get a silicone mermaid tail at one point in their life. Heck! 80% of my viewers expressed interest in getting a silicone tail, and 9% of them already have at least one silicone tail. Silicone tails are pretty awesome! And if you’re reading this article, then chances are YOU agree with that statement. However… silicone mermaid tails aren’t for everyone. If I’ve done my job correctly, by the end of this blog post, you should know whether or not you’re a good fit a silicone mermaid (at the moment). So, let’s get started and find out if YOU are a candidate for getting a silicone tail.
SIZE MATTERS!
Did I get your attention? Good! Now hear me out. 😉
Silicone mermaid tails are custom made to fit your body. That means that if you are not fully grown and you decide to get a tail that you will most likely outgrow your tail and will no longer be able to wear it. On the flip side, if you’re an adult who is in the middle of a weight loss or weight gain journey then you do not want to get a silicone mermaid tail until your weight has stabilized. Does this mean that you have to be a skinny supermodel to be a mermaid (or merman)? Absolutely not! But should you be at a (healthy) stable weight before getting a silicone mermaid tail? Yes. Otherwise, your tail might not fit you very well in the coming months/years! Make sure you’re at a stable weight before you order a silicone mermaid tail.
DO YOU KNOW HOW TO SWIM?
Okay, first of all, you CAN swim, right?
I sure hope so! You have to be a strong swimmer to be able to use a silicone mermaid tail safely. Not only do you have to be a strong swimmer, but you also have to be a strong swimmer in a monofin. What’s a monofin, you ask? Basically, it is one massive flipper with two foot pockets- AKA the unicycle of of the diving world. If you didn’t already know this, each silicone mermaid tail has a monofin inside of it. The monofin is what allows you to move freely through the water while wearing a mermaid tail. Therefore, it is important that you know how to swim in a monofin before getting a silicone mermaid tail. You’ll want to master something called the “dolphin kick” movement. Not only will this movement make you a more graceful and believable merperson, but learning it will also help keep you from drowning. Don’t. Be. That. Mermaid.
Below you’ll find Amazon Affiliate links to two different monofins. The first one is in my Sparda silicone tail, and the second one is the monofin in my Rebellion silicone tail. I urge you to buy a monofin and practice your swimming technique BEFORE you buy a tail! I’ll also link a Fin Fun mermaid tail too, since that’s another great way to learn while also looking mermaidish straight from the get-go.
FORK OVER THE SAND DOLLARS
This may seem like a dumb reminder, but… you need money to buy things! And silicone mermaid tails cost a lot of money. Most tails start at around $3,000 USD and go up from there (although there are some that are cheaper- $1,000 ish). It can take a while to save up, but keep at it. It may be helpful to temporarily give up/ reduce other non-essential purchases, sell things you no longer need or put in a few extra hours at work (or smiling extra hard for those tips!). You’ll find a way to make it happen!
ARE YOU READY FOR COMMITMENT?
Whether you can commit to a relationship or not is none of my business. I’m more interested in how willing you are to dedicate countless hours taking care of a giant, heavy, helpless blob of silicone scales.
Silicone mermaid tails are NOT anything like fabric mermaid tails. Silicone mermaid tails are more like puppies- they are very needy, time consuming and get the floor wet quite often. If you want to get a silicone mermaid tail, be prepared to hand-clean your tail in a bathtub after each swim- even when you’re cold and tired from swimming. Also remember to dry your tail thoroughly after each bath- which is a chore! Be ready to repair paint scrapes, holes and tears frequently too, because silicone tails aren’t indestructible! And hey… if you don’t dry your tail right, you better know how to deal with mold! If you’re kinda lazy and don’t really like putting in extra work when you’re tired, then you might want to avoid getting a silicone mermaid tail.

DO YOU EVEN LIFT, BRO?
What’s slippery, wet and awkward to hold?
How about a 30lbs silicone mermaid tail getting lifted out of the pool! I’m a pretty tiny person. My tails are also tiny as far as mermaid tails go. My smallest silicone tail, Sparda, weighs approximately 30lbs! While that’s not super heavy, it can be difficult to get out of the water, move from location to location or to pick up out of the bathtub. If you want to own a silicone mermaid tail, be prepared to lift at LEAST 30lbs or more, depending on how many fins you plan to have. If you are not able to do much heavy lifting, then you’ll want to make sure you have a reliable helper who can show up when you need them!
It is also important to note that while it is pretty easy to move around in a silicone mermaid tail once you’re in the water (if you know what you’re doing) it is extremely difficult (and painful) to move around on land. You will need to get changed on location OR have someone who can carry you or wheel you around (on a trolley) to your desired destination.
Take it from someone who has wheeled around a silicone mermaid tail 15 minutes one-way down the sweaty streets of Singapore- silicone mermaid tails are not ideal travel buddies and they aren’t for the “strictly independent fishies.”
SAY HELLO TO YOUR NEW ROOMMATE
Do you have room for another human body in your home?
A silicone mermaid tail is literally the outline of your lower body PLUS a massive fluke. Having a silicone mermaid tail is like having a limp human being lying around the house. Do you have space to keep a massive mermaid tail? You will need a place to store it (not the garage), a place to clean it and a space to dry it. Silicone tails hog up a lot of space so take this into consideration before buying one!
(Psst! Want to know how to store a silicone tail? Watch the video below!)
Well, I hope you found this blog post helpful! I’m off to my next adventure, so I’ve got to fly!
