How to use Crystals as a Professional Mermaid (or Merman)
Crystals are beautiful! And just like mermaids, they have mesmerized humans all over the globe for many, many years. Some crystals are sought after for their beauty, others for their strength, monetary value or metaphysical properties. For us performing mermaids and mermen, crystals are invaluable. I have used them many times during different events I’ve worked to help add an extra splash of magic. Never once have they failed me! Just to clarify, I’m not casting spells on children or working any sort of magick with these ethereal stones. No… I use them in a very practical way to aide my performances. I’m about to teach you how to do the same!
AGAIN! This has nothing to do with witchcraft… despite my affiliate’s name!
Where to Buy Crystals Online
If you don’t have a store nearby that sells rocks, gems and crystals (usually an esoteric shop), then it is possible to buy crystals online. My favorite place to buy crystals online is from a place called The White Witch Parlour. Now… I am not a witch… and I know there used to be this terrible assumption that witches are evil, but I can assure you that they are not… nor are Goths, while we’re on the topic. Hehehe! ♥ ANYWAYS!! I’m off topic!! You can get crystals from Jenna, the owner of the White Witch Parlour. She is a VERY sweet lady, and she packages up all of her crystals and goodies so stylishly that receiving the package will make you feel super warm and fuzzy inside. If you would like to get crystals from her, you can shop her store by clicking the link below. I also have a discount code you can use too, since crystals are expensive (although a worthy investment!)

I suggest starting with a Selenite Sphere and a Clear Quartz Sphere. Both can be used as a “magical pearl,” although selenite looks prettier but is NOT water-safe (is dissolves). Clear Quartz Spheres are not AS hypnotic to look at (they are still gorgeous) but they are water-safe and quite durable too.
Use Selenite Spheres to Lure in Shy Children
When you’re a mermaid, something happens that I like to call “the Santa Claus Effect.” You are this magical creature that kids have only dreamed of meeting. While most will come up to you without hesitation, there are always those few that get SO excited to see you, but then get super shy (or scared) when they actually see you in person. I’ve found that Selenite Spheres or Labradorite Spheres can be extremely useful in situations like this. Although neither of these crystals are water-safe (ONLY use them on dry land), they can be safely used for dry-land events. Both of these crystals give off and ethereal internal light. They catch the rays of the sun in such a mesmerizing way that NOBODY can resist them.
If you have a kid who is shy about coming up to you, pull out a small sphere of selenite or labradorite and roll it around in your hands. Ask them if they’d like to come take a look at your magical pearl (selenite) or magical ocean treasure (labradorite). Don’t let the kid actually hold the crystal, since both can shatter if dropped, but do allow them to touch it. Never once has this technique failed me. Curiosity overpowers fear HANDS DOWN.
Wear Crystal Jewelry and Accessories
This is something you may or may not already do as a professional mer-person. If you don’t do it, I suggest that you look into investing in a piece of jewelry that is made with crystals rather than shells. Why’s this? Well, some people do have shellfish allergies that can be set off by the seashells we merfolk commonly wear. Usually, parents will let you know if there is an allergy, and you should ALWAYS ask for private parties… but you DON’T know who you’ll run into at public events. It is always best to be safe rather than sorry!
That aside, crystals add a mystical touch to any outfit. They look nice and don’t require you killing off any sea critters to obtain. Try incorporating some into your look and I know you won’t be disappointing with the results. *Do remember to only wear water-safe crystals in the water though.
Use Crystals for Show-and-Tell/ Story Times
I’m hoping you already have a treasure chest… but if you don’t, get one and fill it with crystals! I work with kids for my day-job, and if there’s ONE thing I’ve learned from working with small children, it’s that they LOVE to touch things. E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G. And as mentioned above, some children (and adults) are sensitive to seashells and may have a life-threatening allergy to them. So, instead of passing around shells at your next story time or show-and-tell, present your group of children with a treasure chest FULL of crystals. Tell stories about where you got each crystal (made up or real… your choice!) and pass the crystals around for everyone to look at and touch. Trust me… kids freak out if they get to use the teacher’s pointing stick. Imagine if they get to hold the magical crystal of a real live merperson!!?! OMG!!!
*Note: Research your crystals before you buy them. Some crystals are not safe to hold for a variety of reasons. Typically, and variation of Quartz is a safe bet!
Use Crystals when Reading “Tallulah: Mermaid of the Great Lakes”
One of my favorite books of all times to read to kids at mermaid events is Tallulah: Mermaid of the Great Lakes. Maybe I’m just biased because it talks about my favorite bodies of water, but… probably not. Pretty sure its a great story plain and simple. How does this story involve crystals? Well, I obviously can’t give away the story, but I can tell you this. In the story, each mermaid has a special gem that matches the color of their tail. When they are young, they must embark on a quest to find this special gem… this is where crystals come into play.
After you read this story, open up your treasure chest and show your group of kiddos YOUR magical crystal that matches YOUR tail! The crystal I use is a very special piece of Black Quartz. Not only does my crystal match the colors at the end of my fluke, but it has a unique Gothic castle look to it (structurally) and my fingers fit around it PERFECTLY. I suggest you pick out a crystal similar to the color of yours to show off after you read this story. Make sure you have a fun tale to tell about how and where you found it. The kids will want to know!
Use Crystals to Explain Transformations
At some point in your career as a professional mermaid or merman, a person is going to ask you how you went from having fins to walking around on two feet. Of course, you can make up any answer that you’d like, but I find it fun to have a crystal nearby to help explain the story. You can use a water-safe crystal necklace, a crystal ball or a regular (natural looking) crystal to help tell your story. Sometimes, I’ll tell the children who see me that I use my magical crystal (which was enchanted by fairies and ONLY works for me) to transform from a mermaid to a human. Crystals look magical, so kids are less likely to question the validity of your story if you’re carrying one with you. After all… mermaids and crystals are both rare sights to see. It would only make sense that when both are present, magic is in the air!
Use Crystal Wands as a Prop for Events
Use Water-Safe Crystals in the Water
Some crystals can actually go swimming with you! They can be used in the water (be cautious of chlorine) to make for a beautiful underwater prop. Quartz spheres can be used for large pearls, glass balls can be used for artificial bubbles and different variations of quartz and colored glass can be used for treasure in an underwater treasure chest display/ treasure hunt (video coming soon ;D). Of course, check with your local aquarium before you start diving with crystals, and make sure not to accidentally lose your crystals while swimming with them… since it can be difficult to tread water while holding on to a crystal (speaking from experience). If you do it right, crystals can make an interesting piece for videos, photo shoots or possibly an aquarium show. Below, I will list a few water-safe crystals that you can use.
A FEW WATER SAFE CRYSTALS
-Clear Quartz
-Smokey Quartz
-Amethyst
-Emerald
-Black Quartz (Mermaid Phantom’s “special gem”)
-Phantom Quartz (another favorite, for obvious reasons!)
-Garnet
-Rose Quartz
*NOTE: As a rule of thumb, if it ends in “ite,” it isn’t alright for the water. ♥
Deal with Merverts (JK)
LOL. I’m joking. Jeez. Chill. I would never recommend throwing a rock at a creepy person. Rocks don’t deserve that kind of treatment.
