MINER’S CASTLE ROCK
Miner’s Castle is a stunning rock formation that rivals the beauty of the famous Pictured Rocks. This natural stone “castle” can be found in Munising, Michigan and isn’t something you’d expect to see in Michigan if you’ve only ever explored the lower peninsula. Late this summer, my dad and I took a trip across the Mackinaw Bridge and into the Upper Peninsula to soak in the beauty of the TRUE Northern Michigan, and to capture some epic mermaid photos and video footage for my YouTube channel. While I’ve seen a LOT of impressive (and weird) things in my lifetime, nothing prepared me for how overwhelmingly unique and eye-catching this natural stone structure would be. And to think something like this exists in Michigan?! Planet Earth… you are so magical that even mermaids have a hard time believing their eyes sometimes!
MINER’S CASTLE MERMAID
Dad and I didn’t really have any formal plans for our trip. We figured we’d go with the flow, find cool places, take cool videos, swim in Lake Superior… that was kinda it as far as plans go. But once we heard about Miner’s Castle, we knew we had to attempt to explore this weird rock. And so, we set off to Miner’s Beach, scouted out a place to put on our swimming gear and got ready for our FIRST ever swim in Lake Superior. Dad put on his flippers and goggles, and I put on my silicone mermaid tail (Sparda) and we headed out in the direction of Miner’s Castle. Unfortunately, shortly after we reached the stony shoreline that led to the king of all rocks, Lake Superior became very fussy and swimming conditions became quite dangerous.
Even though the swimming conditions were getting a bit rough (the wake from speedy boaters didn’t help with this issue) dad and I decided to press on, since we were both determined to swim through the holes that cut through the large stone. But, after we were just within reach of the castle itself, we realized that we valued our lives more than we valued satisfying our curiosity. Despite having ended our underwater exploration prematurely, we did get some very unique video footage of “Mermaid Phantom: The Ghost of the Great Lakes” swimming in the castle’s courtyard. AND! Both of us left with some awesome memories and with a good reminder that the Great Lakes are as powerful as they are beautiful. It was a scary and humbling experience as much as it was a fun and memorable adventure. We plan to revisit this area another time… perhaps with some kayakers or boaters to help us safely reach our destination this time!
