MERMAID SWIMMING IN THE WINTER - Professional Mermaid Polar Plunge!
Swimming in the winter can be dangerous and I do not suggest trying it! But, I don’t always follow my own advice, so here we are…
Last Sunday, I geared up for a mermaid photo shoot at one of my favorite beaches. The sun was shining, the ice was glistening and Lake Michigan was roaring. Sure, the weather wasn’t exactly “summer beach party" weather, but it was warm enough to give a Northern Michigan mermaid an excuse to stretch her fins. Since my parents are awesome, they came along with me. We hauled my 30lbs silicone mermaid tail (Sparda) down a flight of stairs and set up everything by a massive chunk of ice that was attached to a dead(ish) looking tree.
Once I wiggled into my tail and got myself situated near said chunk of ice, mom snapped a few pictures of me and recorded a couple of videos. I had no intention of getting wet at this point and was happily warm! However, during the content-creation process (while I was weighed down by a heavy tail), Lake Michigan decided to create some extra large waves and soaked me from fin to chin! Yep. It pushed pebble (and cold water) up my fluke’s drainage holes and smacked me across the back with its icy cold wetness. At this point, I had already made up my mind… I was going for my FIRST polar plunge!
Obviously, mom and dad didn’t exactly like this idea- I knew it wasn’t a very smart idea either! But, I had been wanting to do a polar plunge in Lake Michigan for a long time, and that moment felt like the right moment to go for it. My fish butt was already in the water at this point, so all I had to do was flip over on my belly and alligator-crawl my way a little further into the lake. As soon as I got into the lake, I realized that I wouldn’t be getting anywhere fast. I flopped around as best as I could, but it was hopeless! The water on the shoreline came and went quickly due to the wavy conditions and I was left (quite literally) feeling like a fish out of water. Seeing that there would be no true “swimming,” I figured it would be best to get out of the lake and dry off. While it was a struggle scooting myself further onto the shore, the lake did send a big wave to give me the extra push that I needed to get to where I was trying to go.
Although this wasn’t a super successful adventure, it did allow for me to mentally check a bucket-list item off of my mermaid bucket list. :)

By the way! How do you like the steampunk-goth mermaid look from this photo shoot? It was a very fun look to put together and I’m excited to experiment more with alternative fashion this year! I actually have a few alternative fashion related videos and blog posts coming up in the future. So, if you’re interested in that, you might want to stay tuned…
