The Almost Blind Mermaid
I have beautiful “Lake Michigan Blue” colored eyes that are so pale they nearly disappear in the sunlight. Perfect for a mermaid, right? If anyone is ever complimenting my appearance, they usually bring up my eyes. However… my eyes may look cool, but they don’t work well at all. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had issues with my eyesight. I am extremely nearsighted and have bad astigmatism. Because of that, I can only see about two-three inches in front of my face without visual aide. I have been told by numerous ophthalmologist and eye surgeons that I am not a candidate for LASIK, SMILE or Refractive Lens Replacement surgeries. Luckily, contact lenses can correct my vision on most days when my eyes aren’t extremely dry, and glasses help enough for me to see a 4-5 feet in front of me… but I can’t wear either of them safely when doing what mermaids do best- swimming.
Up until now, I have avoided working pool parties as a mermaid because I cannot see well enough to navigate a pool without ramming into someone or slapping them with my tail- which REALLY limits the work that I am able to take on. Additionally, swimming without visual aide can be difficult in the open water (where I film most of my videos) since I can easily lose sight of the shore… or my $400 underwater camera, which has happened! Sure, I could keep my contact lenses in and cover them with goggles, but my prescription contacts are very expensive (and necessary for functioning) and I wouldn’t dare risk losing one! While I’ve still been able to accomplish many great things despite my low-vision, there are some things that I simply cannot do without decent eyesight… so now I have some stylish prescription goggles!!
Where to Buy Prescription Goggles?
When I first chose the path of a professional mermaid, I vowed to never wear goggles. Why? Because why would a mermaid wear goggles if a mermaid lived in the water?!? I felt like goggles would look very unattractive and would “ruin the magic” for the kids who I would visit with. But after a VERY frustrating day of attempting to film myself with my $400 dollar underwater camera and ultimately LOSING the camera for a full 5 minutes because of my eyesight (dad found it for me), I was determined to find a pair of prescription goggles so that I could see what it is that I was doing.
In searching for prescription goggles, I came across a place called Goggles N More. They had many different options on their website for goggle styles and color options. I checked their reviews and the website seemed to be trustworthy and appeared to have many satisfied customers. I saw a pair of black prescription goggles that reminded me of steampunk goggles, so my little Gothic self couldn’t help but to fall for that pair. I reached out to this company and asked about testing out their product to review on my YouTube channel and here we are…
Goggles N More Prescription Goggles Review
I think it is important to note that while Goggles N More agreed to sponsor a video on my YouTube channel, they did NOT ask me to write this blog post review. There is a reason I’m spending 3+ hours thinking up words to type for you about this company, and here’s why…
These prescription goggles are a life-changer. Sure, they look a little spooky, and they aren’t meant for diving, but oh my goodness… to be able to pop out of the water and see incoming boat traffic? Life changing! To dive into the water (I’m a rebel) and see a smallmouth bass staring me in the face? Priceless! To actually be able to SEE the smiling face of a child on a nearby boat as a mermaid comes out of the water? Simply magical. Not only have I figured out how to seamlessly incorporate these goggles into my classic Gothic Mermaid look (yay steampunk goth!), but I am also super pleased with them overall!
The goggles I got have a black base that matches my Goth aesthetic and come with the option to get various different colored lenses that are custom made to match your prescription. I decided to go with their orange mirrored lenses, since I swim outdoors and wanted a color/style that would be easily detected if I dropped them in the water (there are not many orange things in Lake Michigan). In addition to correcting my vision even BETTER than my actual prescription glasses, these goggles offer UV protection, so my (very pale) baby blues are safe from that evil all-frying sun. While they do leak a little bit and do fog up some (there are anit-fog wipes and oils you can use), overall the goggles suction very well to my eyes, help me see the world around me (very well too!) and don’t get tangled up in my hair… which is a major plus! I am extremely satisfied with these goggles and WILL be wearing them more often.
Looking to get a pair for yourself or a loved one? Have a look at the link here to get a pair like mine (but in your prescription, of course!): https://www.gogglesnmore.com/adult-prescription-swim-goggles-m2p-black/ Make sure to have your most recent glasses prescription on hand!
Thank you for taking a moment to listen to me rave about these goggles. They’ve (quite literally) helped open my eyes to a deeper level of Lake Michigan beauty. As someone who has spent much of her life “feeling around,” smooshing glasses closer to my face, repeating “I can’t see that far” and squinting as squinty as one can squint to see, I really, REALLY do appreciate these prescription goggled to their fullest. And to ANYONE with limited vision who enjoys swimming in pools, lakes, ponds or oceans, I highly recommend getting a pair of prescription goggles from Goggles N More. You won’t regret it!
Well, I’m off to enjoy my next adventure with renewed vision. Time to end this blog post. Care to join me? ;)

DISCLAIMER: This blog post is NOT sponsored. The original video was, as Goggles N More did send me a free pair of goggles in return for the creation of that video and a few nice photos… but they did not ask me to write this blog post. That was my own doing. This is my website. I can do things that I want to do and stuff. :)
